The state-recognised climatic health resort of Waischenfeld (population around 3,100), with its picturesque half-timbered houses, is romantically nestled in the Wiesent Valley – in the heart of Franconian Switzerland, roughly halfway between Bamberg, Nuremberg and Bayreuth. The River Wiesent, quiet alleyways and the castle ruins overlooking the village make this little town the ideal starting point for walks, water-based tours and climbing trips.
🏰 Sights
- Waischenfeld Castle & Steinerner Beutel – The town’s landmark: a Romanesque round tower some 13 metres high on a limestone cliff, the remains of the medieval castle. Today, the castle houses a restaurant, the registry office and the castle gallery with changing exhibitions.
- Pulvermühle – A historic site in the valley: the legendary ‘Group 47’ held its final meeting here in 1967. Ever since chess greats such as Bobby Fischer (1990/91) and Mikhail Botvinnik (1993) visited, top-class chess tournaments have been held here regularly. A literary trail commemorates Group 47.
- Historic buildings – The Kommunbrauhaus (1644) and the Alte Barthelshaus (17th century) bear witness to the town’s long history.
- Churches – St John the Baptist Parish Church, St Lawrence’s Chapel, the Romanesque St Anne’s Chapel and the “Weiße Marter”.
📜 History
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1122 and brought prosperity to the area in the Middle Ages. In 1311, Emperor Louis the Bavarian granted the town its charter. Hard times were brought about by the Hussite invasion in 1430, the troops of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades in 1552/53, and the Thirty Years’ War, during which the town was almost completely burnt to the ground.

- Around 100 climbing spots in the surrounding area – the Aalkorber Walls are among the most popular climbing walls in southern Germany.
- The surrounding area boasts rocks and caves, as well as the Rabeneck and Rabenstein valley castles with the Sophienhöhle cave.
