With a population of around 2,200, Thurnau offers a surprisingly rich array of sights and culinary delights – making it one of the lesser-known gems of Franconian Switzerland.
🏰 Thurnau Castle
At the heart of the town stands Thurnau Castle, built in the 13th century. Parts of the castle have undergone extensive restoration in recent years; today, the universities of Bayreuth and Bamberg use the building to house the Institute for Franconian Regional History. The castle also houses a conference hotel with a restaurant, which is open to guests at weekends and can be booked for weddings and events.
An architectural highlight in the town centre is the covered walkway that connects the castle directly to the town church of St Laurentius. The church itself is well worth a visit – its impressive stucco ceiling is unique in the region. schloss-thurnau.de
🦢 Castle Pond & Schlossbräu am See
Behind the castle lies the Schlossweiher, home to swans, which you can easily walk around. Right on the shore is the Schlossbräu am See restaurant – from the beer garden, you can enjoy a wonderful view across the pond, accompanied by Franconian specialities from the kitchen.
🏺 Pottery – the town’s craft
Thurnau is renowned far and wide for its vibrant pottery tradition. A dedicated museum explores the history of local pottery; several studios and workshops offer their work for sale. Once a year, a large pottery market transforms the town centre into a colourful marketplace – a treat for collectors and the curious alike.
