Egloffstein is picturesquely situated on a hillside in the Trubach Valley, in the heart of Franconian Switzerland (Forchheim district). The village has been a state-recognised climatic health resort since 1956.
🏰 Egloffstein Castle
Egloffstein Castle towers above the village; it can be traced back to before 1180 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Egloffstein. What makes it special is that it has remained in the family’s possession to this day. The parish church of St Bartholomew was built in 1750 on the site of the former castle chapel.
🕳️ Rock Cellars
Beneath the castle, the rock cellars – which are open to the public – extend some 700 metres into the mountain. Fourteen cellar passages covering around 12,000 m² were once hewn out of the rock to keep beer and food cool.
