🗺 Overview
High above Scheßlitz, Giechburg Castle sits enthroned on a Jura hilltop on the western edge of Franconian Switzerland. From here, the view stretches far across the Regnitz Valley as far as Bamberg – a popular destination for day trips, featuring a castle tavern, beer garden and panoramic views.
📜 History
The complex dates back to the Counts of Schweinfurt and is first mentioned in 1125. In 1137, it passed to the Counts of Andechs (of Merano) through marriage. In 1390, the Diocese of Bamberg acquired the castle, expanded it considerably and used it for a long time as its administrative seat – at times, even the Bamberg Cathedral Treasury was kept here. The Peasants’ War (1525) and the Margrave War (1553) caused damage; following secularisation in 1803, the castle fell into ruin. Since a Friends’ Association (1967) and the Bamberg district (from 1971) took charge, the complex has been restored and is once again open to the public.
🏰 Architecture & Views
The oldest part is the imposing square keep (approximately 13 metres on each side). The curtain wall with its round bastions (rondels) dates from after 1600. Art exhibitions are held regularly in the keep, and the panoramic view from the castle wall is one of the finest in the area.
🍺 Catering
Catering is available: large snack platters, coffee and cake, plus a beer garden. The castle also offers space for conferences, family celebrations and events.
💡 Tip
A short walk (a good 15 minutes) leads from the castle over to the Gügel, where the pilgrimage church of St Pankratius stands on a steep rock – offering fantastic views into the distance from there too.
For those who find walking difficult, there are car parks right next to the castle.
