Breweries

Krug Breitenlesau

Krug is situated in the upper Wiesent Valley, on the old trade route between Nuremberg and Bayreuth. -Bräu is the largest brewery in Franconian Switzerland, yet it has remained a genuine family business.

📜 History

The great-great-grandfather bought the estate in 1825, and the brewing licence was acquired in 1834. The Krug family has been brewing beer here ever since; today, three generations live and work under one roof.

🍺 Beer

Around 30,000 hectolitres leave the brewhouse each year, about 80 per cent of which is the famous dark lager, which ranks among the best in the entire region: not too sweet and not too bitter. There are also other beers on tap and in bottles:

  • Dark lager, the classic
  • Breitenlesauer Hell, mild and malty
  • Urstoff, a naturally cloudy cellar beer
  • plus Pilsner and wheat beer

The beer is exported as far afield as Denmark, Italy and Russia, even though it is hardly advertised at all.

🍽️ Pub & Beer Garden

The pub is open all year round and has a large beer garden. You order your food inside, and the staff will bring it to your table. It’s best to make a note of your table number when ordering. You help yourself to the beer.

  • The Viennese-style pork schnitzel is delicious here.
  • For vegetarians, the celery schnitzel is also highly recommended.

🕺 Dance hall

The brewery has its own dance hall. From October to April, DJs or live bands regularly provide music here at the weekends.
