The Devil’s Cave near Pottenstein is one of the largest and most impressive tourist caves in Germany and the absolute highlight among the caves of Franconian Switzerland. The circular walk follows a well-maintained path, around one kilometre long, through immense chambers filled with stalactite and stalagmite formations.
🕳 The cave
Over thousands of years, water has carved out a vast cave system here. The guided tour takes you through high domes and narrow passages, past countless stalactites and stalagmites. Particularly impressive are the large, fused stalactite columns, some of which took thousands of years to form. During excavations, numerous bones of Ice Age animals were found in the cave, including the remains of a cave bear, whose skeleton can now be seen in the entrance area.

- 🌡 The temperature remains constant at around 9 °C all year round; please bring sturdy shoes and a jacket
- 🎟 Visits are by guided tour only; during the peak season, tours depart at short intervals
- 🎶 Concerts are occasionally held in the halls throughout the year; the natural acoustics are exceptional
- ❄️ The cave is closed in winter – please check the opening times beforehand
☕ On site
Next to the ticket office, there’s a terrace café where you can enjoy the view over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The cave is also an ideal starting or finishing point for walks around Pottenstein, such as through the wild and romantic Klumpertal valley.
