The Sophienhöhle is picturesquely situated in the Ailsbach Valley, below Rabenstein Castle. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful stalactite and stalagmite caves in southern Germany — many of its formations are exceptionally well-preserved and snow-white.
The cave
The cave is named after Duchess Sophie of Bavaria. It was opened to visitors in the 19th century and continues to impress to this day with its richly decorated chambers: delicate sinter formations, massive stalagmite columns and glittering walls. Because it has been developed with great care, it retains a particularly unspoilt appearance. Bones of Ice Age cave bears have also been found here.

Location
The Ailsbach Valley itself is a rewarding hiking destination: a peaceful, rock-lined valley away from the main tourist crowds. The Sophienhöhle is within walking distance of the car parks below Rabenstein Castle.
