The Görauer Anger offers a wonderful view of the Kulmbach countryside and plenty of space for a stroll. The plateau stretches for around 4 km along the Albtrauf escarpment, between Zultenberg and Görau. Unlike the narrow rocky paths of Franconian Switzerland, here you walk across open, soft grassland, with the escarpment always on your right and your gaze always taking in the vast expanse.
🌸 Dry grassland
A unique flora has been preserved in the dry grassland steppe. The nutrient-poor limestone soil and centuries of sheep grazing have favoured species that have long since disappeared elsewhere: pasque flowers and gentians in spring, followed later by wild orchids and silver thistles. That is precisely why the Anger is a protected area, and that is precisely why you should stay on the path here and not venture into the middle of it.
🪨 Rocks and legends
At the edge of the plateau stand bizarre dolomite rocks, around which the usual tales are woven, from ‘Devil’s Stones’ to sunken treasures. The land drops steeply away from the rocky cliffs, with views stretching across the Kulmbach region as far as the Franconian Forest.
🥾 Hiking
The Anger is easy to walk around in either direction; the path is flat and suitable for families too. If you’re up for a bit more, combine it with a loop up to the neighbouring Kordigast. It’s at its most beautiful here in May during the flowering season and on clear autumn evenings.
🚗 How to get there
The starting point is the village of Görau near Weismain, where there is a car park for walkers. From here, the path leads up to the plateau in just a few minutes. The area is freely accessible.
